The First Route

Where every mile was a lesson, and every stop, a promise kept.

It was a rainy Tuesday in November of 1978. The air in Moultrie hung heavy with humidity and the scent of wet pine. I was 24 years old, fresh out of the service, and standing in the muddy lot of the logistics depot on the edge of town. My hands were shaking—not from the cold, but from the sheer weight of the responsibility about to be placed upon my shoulders.

They handed me the keys to a 1974 Chevrolet C-650. She was a beast of a truck, painted a faded blue that had seen better days. The engine coughed and sputtered before finally catching, sounding like an old man trying to clear his throat. That truck was my partner, my teacher, and my prison for the next three years.

Load the truck with crates of tomatoes, peaches, and cantaloupes from the local farms. Drive down the winding roads, dodging potholes and rain-soaked leaves. Drop off the goods at the corner stores, the roadside stands, and the small family markets that dotted the landscape.

But it wasn't simple. The roads were treacherous, especially after a storm. Bridges were washed out, and detours could add hours to the trip. And then there was the competition. Other drivers, bigger companies, all vying for the same customers. They had bigger trucks, better routes, and deeper pockets. I had nothing but a beat-up Chevy and a stubborn determination to succeed.

The Lessons Learned

That first year taught me more than I could have imagined. I learned how to fix a flat tire in the middle of nowhere. I learned how to negotiate with a farmer who thought his peaches were worth twice what they were worth. I learned how to keep a smile on my face, even when the road was long and the nights were cold.

But the most important lesson was this: every delivery was a promise. When I pulled up to a store, the owner knew I would show up on time, no matter the weather, no matter the obstacle. They trusted me to bring the freshest produce, the best quality, and the most honest price. That trust was everything. It was the foundation upon which I built my career.
